THE BASIC REFRIGERATION CYCLE:
SOURCE: THE REFRIGERATION INSTITUTE
The refrigerant enters the suction valve of the compressor as a low pressure, low temperature, superheated vapor. The refrigerant exits the compressor and enters the discharge line as a high pressure, high temperature, superheated vapor. The refrigerant enters the condenser as a high pressure, high temperature, superheated vapor. Here the refrigerant rejects heat. In the first part of the condenser the refrigerant is de-superheated, and becomes a high pressure, high temperature, saturated vapor. In the second or main part of the condenser, the refrigerant is condensed into high pressure, high temperature, saturated liquid. In the last part of the condenser the refrigerant is sub-cooled, and becomes a high pressure, high temperature, sub-cooled liquid. The refrigerant enters the liquid line as a high pressure, high temperature, sub-cooled liquid. The refrigerant enters the metering device, as a high pressure, high temperature, sub-cooled liquid, and exits the metering device as a low pressure, low temperature, saturated liquid, approximately 75% liquid and 25% vapor for a typical R-22 air conditioning system. Here the refrigerant absorbs heat, boiling the refrigerant. Approximately 90% of the way through the evaporator the refrigerant is completely boiled and becomes a low pressure, low temperature, saturated vapor (100% vapor) and continues to absorb heat (super heat). The refrigerant exits the evaporator and enters the suction line as a low pressure, low temperature, super heated vapor. Now the refrigerant enters the suction valve of the compressor as a low pressure, low temperature, superheated vapor and the cycle continues!
