Reasons to Consider Local Water Filtration on Nassau County

Brown Rusty Water - Iron

Does your water look rusty or brownish? Do you want to take a nice hot bath in a tub filled with clean clear water? Removing iron from your water is easy and if done properly, will eliminate all your problems in just a couple of hours.

Contaminants in Bottled Water - Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC)

Many studies have revealed that bottled water may not be superior to tap water. A 1996 study by the state of New York concluded in its research that many types of bottled water may contain volatile organic compounds. A volatile organic compound is a contaminant which may have short or long term health effects. A common VOC found is Toluene, which is thought to be entering the products from the bottling process, caps and containers, or labeling process.

Contaminants in Tap Water - Parasites

In 1993 there was an outbreak of Cryptosporidium in Milwaukee which sickened approximately 403,000 people and killed more than 100 people. Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that is able to make its way to the surface of water supplies, such as reservoirs. Chlorine does not kill this parasite and it can cause days of digestive system misery. Death may result in people with weakened immune systems.

Contaminants in Tap Water - MTBE

MTBE stands for the synthetic compound Methyl Tertiary-Butyl Ether. It is a gasoline additive which has contaminated many of our water supplies across the country. It is added to gasoline in an attempt to make gas burn cleaner, however, studies have indicated that it has had little impact in reducing pollution.

MTBE is a known animal carcinogen and a possible human carcinogen.

MTBE has a high affinity to water molecules and does not readily bind to soil particles. This makes it travel quickly to underground water sources.

MTBE are released into the environment via transport accidents, leaking tanks, or simply over-filling at gas stations.

One of the many filters installed by AWS Plumbing, Heating & Cooling is the Aquapure AP-DWS1000. This filter meets NSF Standard 53 approved for MTBE reduction. It also addresses taste, odor, VOC, lead, cyst and turbidity concerns. With its quick change filter cartridges and low water cost of only $.30 per gallon, this filter is a great addition to any house.

Contaminants in Water - Chlorine

"Taking long hot showers is a health risk…showers-and to a lesser extend baths-lead to a greater exposure to toxic chemicals contained in water supplies than does drinking water. The chemicals evaporate out of the water and are inhaled. They can also spread through the house and be inhaled by others. House holders can receive 6 to 100 times more of the chemical by breathing the air around showers and bath than they would by drinking the water…"

Bacteria in Water

Water is susceptible to bacterial contamination after it leaves the public water supply. Many areas of our water distribution piping, facilitate the growth of bacteria. "There it finds warmer temperatures, stagnation, and smaller pipes, valves and fittings. Biofilm that forms on valves and fittings and pipe walls not only feeds bacteria but also protects them from the hot water and chlorine that typically would kill free floating organisms."

Types of Bad Bacteria

  1. Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
  2. Helicobacter
  3. Legionella*
  4. E. Coli
  5. Mycobacterium Avium

*Legionella is almost always transmitted through water

People who may have compromised immune systems, elderly people, and those who are already fighting some kind of disease, may be more susceptible to becoming infected with such bacteria.

Treatment Methods

Chemical Disinfection

Treatment from the public water supply cannot be relied upon solely to disinfect our water. Chlorine concentration levels vary from city to city, and within the water distribution system. Much of the chlorine dissipates in the hot water heater and cannot be detected at the hot water faucet.

Hot Water Temperatures

While most bacteria flourish in warm water temperatures, most will not multiply in the 122 F-124 F range. Maintaining a temperature of 140 F water to all taps has been found to control waterborne pathogens. This is NOT recommended by AWS, especially if there are small children or elderly people in the home, who may be more likely to get SCALDED. Increasing the water temperature in the water heater may be done if the water feeding the faucets is mixed down to a cooler temperature with a thermostatic mixing valve.

Filters

Water filters are perhaps the best defense against bacteria. The following filters may be used to reduce bacterial contamination:

  1. Ultraviolet filters
  2. 2. 0.2 micron filters
  3. RO (Reverse Osmosis) filters

It is important to remember that proper maintenance of any water filtration system is necessary. Improper maintenance may increase the presence of bacterial pathogens.

Water Treatment Can Help You Save Energy!

A study conducted by the Water Quality Research Foundation, and the WQA, found that hard water can increase hot water heater energy expenses by up to 28 percent! "If that holds true then a water softener that removes calcium could be the second best energy saver in the home." It has also been estimated that shower heads could become plugged with debris in as short as a year and a half. It may be conjectured that appliances which operate with our water, may last longer and be disposed of less with proper water filtration techniques.
