Cleaning a toilet with rubber gloves on

Best Toilet Cleaning Practices

The bathroom is one of the most private places in your home. Away from pets and kids, your toilet gives you the chance to relax and feel free of all distractions; there’s a reason they call it the porcelain throne!

As a seat fit for a king or queen, it’s important that your toilet stay sparkly clean. Here is our list of best cleaning practices to keep your bathroom looking royal.

The Essentials

It’s a Saturday morning and you are ready to take on cleaning the bathroom! Here is what you need:

  • Rubber gloves
  • Toilet cleaner and cleaning spray (we’ll talk details below)
  • Paper towels or cleaning rags
  • Toilet brush

Gather all these before you start to avoid having to wash your hands or remove your gloves often.

Cleaning Products

The right cleaning products will make your toilet cleaning process easier. For toilet cleaners, picking up the first product you see at the store may work great for you!

If you’d rather opt for a chemical-free solution, you can use white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or even a can of Coca-Cola! This may sound like a waste of a soda, but many people swear by it to remove rust rings.

Get Cleaning

Now that you have your supplies ready, it’s time to put on the rubber gloves and get to work.

Step 1 - Turn on your vent bathroom vent fan.

It will take in any floating bacteria before they settle on other bathroom surfaces.

Step 2 - Apply the toilet cleaner.

Flush the toilet to get water flowing on the sides, then apply your toilet cleaner. Wait a few minutes to let everything soak in.

Step 3 - Wipe down the toilet exterior.

While you wait for the cleaner to seep in, clean the rest of the toilet. Wipe down any dust and hair that may have settled on top of the tank, or around the base. You may use a cleaning spray, but keep in mind that we’ll disinfect the whole toilet in the last step!

Step 4 - Scrub, Scrub, Scrub!

Grab your toilet brush and get back to the toilet bowl. Scrub the cleaner around the entire bowl, making sure to get up around the inside of the seat. Once you’ve put your muscles to work, flush the toilet. You may want to close the lid to avoid any excess spray.

Step 5 - Disinfect

The final step is to get things sanitary! Throughout the cleaning process, bacteria and grime may have found their way onto the toilet and surrounding surfaces. Spray down everything with disinfectant spray and give it a good wipe down!

Your throne is now set and ready for the coronation!
